Servers (SSH)
Let the agent work on another machine, with rules you set per server.
Hex Code can work on another machine over SSH: the agent's commands and file tools run there instead of on your Mac. Open Customize → Servers.
Signing in
Hex signs in with SSH keys only. It never asks for, sees or stores a server password. If a server doesn't accept your key yet, Set up key sign-in walks you through it: check that this Mac has a key, copy its public half to the server from Terminal, then test.
Add a server
Any server in your SSH settings file (~/.ssh/config) shows up by itself. Add a server asks for a name, an address and, if needed, a user, port and key, and shows you the exact lines it will add to that file before anything is written.
Test connection tells you in plain words what is wrong when it fails: the server didn't accept a key, this Mac has never connected to it, the server's identity changed, the address wasn't found, or it didn't answer.
How careful Hex is on each server
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Always ask | Every command and every edit waits for your yes. This is the default. |
| Ask for changes only | Commands that only look (ls, cat, git status, logs) run. Edits and everything else ask. |
| Follow the chat's mode | Works like on your Mac: in Auto, commands and edits run without asking. |
Whatever you choose, Hex always asks before reading key and password files, before destructive commands (sudo, rm -r, reboot), and before touching files outside the session's folder. Approval cards name the server, so it is always clear where a command will run.
"Always allow" on a server is remembered for that server only. Ask again on the server's card clears it.
Use a server
In a Hex Code chat, open the folder bar and pick the server. The session starts in the folder you set under Start in folder, or in the home folder.
What's different on a server
- Changes can't be undone from Hex: there are no checkpoints there. The agent is told to read before it edits and to keep changes small.
- Commands that keep running in the background, and reading PDFs, Word files or pictures, work on your Mac only.
- Activity on each server's card lists the commands the agent ran and the files it changed, newest first. The list is kept on your Mac.
