Updating Hex

Hex checks for a new version when it opens and every few hours after that.

Restart to update

When a new version is out, Hex downloads it in the background and an Update button appears at the top right of the window. Once it's downloaded, the button says Restart to update: click it to see what's new, then restart. Hex quits, swaps in the new version and opens again, usually within a few seconds. Your chats and settings are kept.

Every download is checked against its checksum before it's installed. If anything goes wrong, the previous version is put back.

Check now

Settings → About → Check for updates.

If Hex can't update itself

If Hex isn't in a folder it can change (for example, Applications is managed by your organisation), Update opens the new installer in your browser instead. Open it and drag Hex to Applications.
