Install Hex
Download, install and open Hex on your Mac.
Hex is an AI agent for macOS. It runs a model on your Mac and uses tools (files, a terminal, a browser, simulators) to get work done, with you in control of what it may do.
Requirements
- macOS 12 Monterey or later
- Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) or an Intel Mac. Apple Silicon is much faster for models.
- 8 GB of memory or more; 16 GB or more lets you run larger models
- About 3 to 10 GB of free disk space for the app and a model
Install
- Go to Download and choose Apple Silicon or Intel. Not sure? Open the Apple menu → About This Mac and look at Chip.
- Open the downloaded
.dmgand drag Hex into Applications. - Open Hex from Applications.
If macOS says it can't check Hex for malicious software, Control-click Hex in Applications, choose Open, then Open again. You only need to do this once.
First launch
Hex opens with a short setup before anything else:
- Create your free account or sign in. Hex needs an account; there's no card to enter. Sign in with your browser is the easiest way.
- A few questions (all optional): what you'll use Hex for, your role, and how you heard about it.
- Get a model. Hex recommends a built-in model that fits your Mac and downloads it in the background.
- Try Pro free for 7 days, or continue on Free.
- Your name, colour and appearance.
You can skip the rest of the setup once you're signed in. Your chats and files stay on your Mac either way.
Next: Get your first model.
